The Arkansas City school board decided Thursday to continue for the time being with one vacant seat on the board of education. That was the result after a vote to appoint local bank executive Lance Niles failed 3-2. Niles was the only person to apply for the position. The position was left open after Dr. Aaron Watters resigned last month. Before the vote, several board members asked about a potential conflict of interest for Niles, because his wife, Tamara, serves as the school board’s attorney. Other concerns raised were that Niles might gain an advantage in the November board election because he would run as an incumbent.
