This past Monday night, lots of people gathered for the Winfield Fair Association’s Fat Stock Sale, that was held following a barbecue put on by the Cowley County 4-H clubs. Buyers bid on and purchased 126 lots of cattle, swine, sheep and goats, with a premium value of $91,525. The four top winners were Makenna Pirtle, with her grand champion meat goat; Peyton King, with her grand champion market lamb; Cale Shorter, with his grand champion market steer; and Tyler Thiel, with his grand champion market hog. This year though, average prices for the animals was slightly lower than last year. Last year buyers’ premiums totaled $94,525. This year, that number was down to $91,525. This year, 126 animals were sold for an average price of $726 per animal. Last year’s average price was about $756.20… representing about a 3 percent loss in sales.
