An inmate who escapted from Winfield prison has been caught and arrested in Butler County. 53 year old Lewis Mitchell walked away from the Winfield Correctional Facility around 11 Tuesday night. Mitchell was captured around 5:30 Wednesday afternoon in Butler County by deputies, and taken into custody, after he was spotted by a Butler County deputy, who saw him hitchhiking along Highway 77. Mitchell told the deputy he would not be taken alive, and ran into a cornfield, so tracking dogs, a helicopter and drones were brought in to aid in the search. Local schools were put on lockdown. Mitchell was serving a 27-month sentence for burglary to a non-dwelling. He was first locked up in the Winfield Correctional Facility on July 17th. He also has previous convictions, including a 1981 conviction for theft and burglary, and a 1995 conviction for aggravated indecent liberties with a child… all in Sedgwick County.
