Arkansas City Police took an Arkansas City man into custody Friday after an armed standoff that occured just west of Riverview Cemetery. 45 year old Jason Vanderveen was taken into custody after the standoff, which lasted for several hours, and involved South Central Kansas SWAT. As of last report though, Vanderveen has not been arrested, but a police investigation is ongoing that could result in criminal charges. He remained in custody however, awaiting a mental health evaluation. It all began on Friday morning, when police got a call, indicating that Vanderveen had begun having hallucinations and had become increasingly agitated… reportedly even firing a handgun once or twice. When police responded to a house on West Kansas AvVanderveen outside, but he retreated back inside when they showed up. Officers then began cordoning off the immediate area and evacuating neighboring residents and businesses, including the City of Arkansas City’s Parks and Facilities Division shop. No was injured during the standoff and Vanderveen was taken into custody without incident.
