It is hard not to notice them but a large number of trees in Cowley County are now experiencing webworm infestation and the result is, those trees are losing vegetation. Cowley County Extension agent Jill Zimmerman points out the infestation of these bugs, which are not not to be confused with bag worms commonly seen on cedar trees, is very thick in some parts of the county. Fall webworms do not kill trees, they just completely defoliate them. Zimmerman said a secondary issue is likely to blame for a dead tree that was previously covered in the worms. Zimmerman said the best defense against the worms is engaging in some prior planning by spraying them earlier in the year, while they are small.
