The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning for Arkansas City through Tuesday afternoon.
At 8 p.m. Sunday, the river stood at 9.3 feet. Flood stage is 11 feet. The forecast calls for the river to rise above flood stage by early Monday morning and continue to rise to near 11.8 feet by early this afternoon. The river should fall below flood stage by Tuesday afternoon. However, heavy rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday. The impact at 11 feet is expected flooding of agricultural lands, with bank overflows on the west side of the river, including West Chestnut Avenue. According to a hazardous weather outlook, a half-inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain, along with some potentially strong thunderstorms, are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Experts say you should never drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. They say even shallow flowing water can wash a car from the roadway.
