The Cowley County Jail is making some procedural changes, after two inmates died there in less than two months late last year. According to the Courier Traveler, Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti said the changes include red “alert” signs and sign-in sheets placed on holding cells. The deaths included 48 year old Jason Porter of Arkansas City, who died at the jail last October, after falling from a staircase railing in one of the general population pods. His death was ruled a suicide. A second inmate, 33 year old Jesse Crable of Winfield, died in November after being found unresponsive in a holding cell. His death is believed to have been due to natural causes, but final results of an autopsy are still pending. Both deaths were investigated by the sheriff’s office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
