The National Weather Service in Wichita has placed Cowley County and much of southern Kansas under a Red Flag Warning from noon until 9 p.m. this evening.

Other counties under the Red Flag Warning besides Cowley County are Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Kingman, Sedgwick, Harper-Sumner, Elk, Chautauqua, Rice, McPherson, Marion and Chase.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast. Winds will be out of the south for Wednesday afternoon at 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph possible. Humidity will be as low as 25% along with warmer temperatures near 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Mixing warm temperatures, high winds and low humidity make for the perfect fuel for dangerous fires.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the field of this fire weather product.
