A suspected arsonist has been arrested near Arkansas City… 35 year old Jeffry “JD” Strange had to be tased in order for police to take him into custody Wednesday night, after they say he set fire to a welding shop in south Arkansas City. It all began when Ark City police responded to a domestic disturbance yesterday afternoon around 5:30 on South Ninth Street, where a woman told officers that Strange had hit her in the face and threatened to burn down their house. That evolved into a standoff situation, and while negotiations were underway, police say Strange entered a commercial welding business nearby, where he set a fire. When police stormed in, Strange was found sitting on a 4-wheeler armed with a large knife. They used a taser to take him into custody, and that’s when they learned he also had a loaded firearm. No officers were hurt. The welding shop however, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighers from Ark City and Winfield got there. Some people nearby had to be evacuated, and utility companies were called in to shut off services, after power poles nearby caught fire . The building was a total loss. Strange is now in the Cowley County Jail… being held without bail… and charged with domestic battery, arson, disorderly conduct and theft of a firearm.
