ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Due to the ever-changing climate of the COVID pandemic, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor has cancelled their 26th annual Dick Metz Memorial Golf Tournament that was scheduled for August 22 in an effort to keep staff, volunteers and participants safe.
“Our golf tournament is a huge success every year. The overall loss expected from the cancellation is $20,000,” said Sarah Griggs, executive director of the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. “Without the funds, we jeopardize our ability to continue the Good Samaritan Program, which cares for an average of 34 residents. The good news is that we will continue to host our Karl Faidley Golf Ball Drop in a way that can safely adhere to social distancing standards.”
The ball drop will take place on the front lawn of the Presbyterian Manor at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 20 and will take place virtually as a Facebook live event. Ball drop tickets sell for $10 each and can be purchased by going to https://giving.presbyterianmanors.org/ and scrolling down to the link for the Annual Dick Metz Memorial Golf Tournament event. All proceeds support the Good Samaritan Program.
“We are grateful to Evergy for working with us so we can continue our ball drop tradition and raise the necessary funds to supplement our Good Samaritan Program. Now you do not have to be a golfer and commit to a long day on the course to get involved and support this awesome program for seniors,” said Griggs.
The tournament was named for the late golf pro and Arkansas City native, Richard “Dick” C. Metz, who was a leading golf pro in the 1930s and 1940s. After Metz’ death, a golf tournament name for him was started to benefit the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Program, which provides assistance for residents who have outlived their financial resources.
