Cowley County courthouses in Winfield and Arkansas City, are requireing everyone from judges, to staff, visitors, attorneys, and clients… in accordance with state guidelines… to wear masks. In some cases, a mask may be removed in a hearing for a special reason, perhaps when it is hard to hear what someone is saying if he or she is wearing a mask. But before removing their mask, the person must get permission from the judge, and then they must also maintain social distancing. The courthouses have paper masks available if someone forgets to bring a mask with them. On Monday and Tuesday this week, the Ark City Court did something completely new… they held session outside in a gazebo near the courthouse in order to maximize social distancing. They now report that the outdoor court worked pretty well.
