Kansas’ Democratic governor on Tuesday vetoed a sweeping Republican coronavirus measure that would have limited her power to direct the state’s pandemic response, but under pressure, she did turn over to local officials the authority to keep restrictions on businesses. Kelly admitted that she had to turn over the power to set harsh restrictions to the local counties, in order to persuade GOP lawmakers to extend the state of emergency. The governor still faces a significant risk of a potential court challenge. Kelly… along with other Democratic governors in other blue states including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin… is facing a strong backlash from Republicans over their collective mis-handling of many aspects of the coronavirus situation. The others are governors of what are viewed as key swing states important to President Trump’s reelection, and thye are facing severe criticism in those states. Here in Kansas, Trump won in 2016 by a large margin, and he is expected to repeat that performance in Kansas again this year.
