Mark Potter, a former two-sport star turned coaching great who was inducted into Cowley College’s Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008, shared his battle with severe depression in the hopes of helping others during his presentation Tuesday night inside Cowley College’s Robert Brown Theatre. Potter coached more than 800 games during his 30-year tenure and has the most victories and highest winning percentage in the history of the Newman University men’s basketball program. He was inducted into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. In the midst of a successful career that included more than 330 wins at Newman, 17 years ago, Potter was sidelined for eight games during the Jets’ season as he battled severe depression. Once returning to the sidelines, Potter vowed to educate and encourage others with a mental illness to seek assistance.
