The National Weather Service in Wichita has placed Cowley County and much of southern and central Kansas under a Red Flag Warning for Wednesday, going from 9 a.m.until 6 p.m.

The Red Flag Warning covers areas from western Oklahoma up to Kansas City and Omaha.

Humidity will be as low as 23%, and we’re likely to see south winds ranging from 30-35 mph with gust up to 50 mph possible. High winds and low humidity help fuel any fires that could develop.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the field of this fire weather product.

As shown on the map below from NWS Wichita, Cowley County is in the Extreme to Critical zone.
