A peaceful protest against institutional racism and to honor the lives of black people killed by police is planned for Saturday in downtown Arkansas City, from 1 to 6pm, at the corner of Summit Street and Central Avenue. It may also spread to other intersections depending on crowd size. Organizers say it is being held to celebrate the lives of many, including Tayler Rock, an Ark City resident killed by a Cowley County Sheriff’s deputy in 2014. The shooting was deemed justified. Those behind the planned protest, say they have consulted with Police Chief Dan Ward to ensure the safety of the protesters, and local business owners between Chestnut and Fifth Avenue are aware. Participants are asked to bring a face covering, hand sanitizer and water to drink, because it is forecast to be very hot on Saturday.
