The USD 465 board of education met Monday night, and unanimously decided that schools will open at Level 1… meaning in person education… on September 9th. The decision was made after hearing from Superintendent Dr. Nathan Reed that he and City-Cowley County Health Department Director Thomas Langer agree that the situation right now is safe for that level because in the previous week there have been 60 or fewer active cases in USD 465 boundaries and absences are not above a baseline. Of course, temperature checks, face masks, at least six feet of social distancing when possible will be observed. The district plans to continue operating at that level for at least the next three weeks, unless things change dramatically. Meanwhile, the Arkansas City school board chose to implement a hybrid learning model with students in class two days a week combined with remote learning days. The reason they gave is that COVID-19 appears to be more prevalent in the Ark City area.
