August 8 Women for Kansas meetup includes presentation on Cowley County Drug Court’s Success Journey over the last 10 years.

Winfield, Kansas—July 29, 2020 – Women for Kansas – Cowley County (W4K—CC) will hold their August meetup from 10:00-11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 8th, at the City Hall Community Council Room, 200 E 9th Ave., Winfield. The event is free and open to the public. Plan to wear your mask and we will socially distance our seating.

The meetup features a presentation by District Judge Nick St. Peter & Mary Read, Director, Drug Court Coordinator, entitled, “Cowley County Drug Court’s Success Journey.” Our presenters will begin by sharing the Drug Court Program is a problem-solving court designed to manage cases involving non-violent drug offenders. It is a court-supervised, comprehensive program for select chemically dependent defendants.
The program consists of five “phases.” Each phase is designed to help the participant to gain the skills they will need to live a life free of crime and free of drug and alcohol use.

Drug courts are established by a team approach between the criminal justice system and social services organizations. This partnership structures treatment intervention around the influence and personal involvement of a single Drug Court Judge. The Judge, Drug Court Team, and participant work together toward the goal of stopping the cycle of drug abuse and criminal behavior.

“The Cowley County Drug Court’s intention to reduce recidivism of our alcohol and drug offenders within the criminal justice system is impressive and deserves to be showcased in this community event.” said Pam Moreno, W4K—CC leader.

Women for Kansas—Cowley County holds regular meetings on the second Saturday of each month. All are welcome. For more information about this event or Women for Kansas—Cowley County, contact Pam Moreno, 620-262-2326 or email [email protected].
