A Winfield man has been found competent to stand trial in the case in which he is charged with aggravated indecent liberties with a child younger than 14. Austin McKinney was previously declared incompetent and ordered to undergo further treatment during a court appearance in January. Now, a preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled to begin at 10am on February 28th. The first time around, McKinney was evaluated at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility last summer, where he was found not to be competent to stand trial. He is charged in connection with an incident that took place back on June 12, 2018. McKinney remains behind bars in the Cowley County Jail, but his bond has been reduced to $10,000, and if he is able to post it, he has been ordered to have no contact with the victim or the victim’s family.
